How to use OBS to live-stream with WorkCast

This article is a step-by-step guide on how to use OBS to live-stream to WorkCast

In the digital landscape, live-streaming offers a dynamic way to engage with your audience in real-time. By leveraging your webcam and broadcasting software such as OBS, you can stream your content in high-quality to WorkCast via RTMP (Real-Time Messaging Protocol). Below you will find the process of setting up and live-streaming to WorkCast using broadcasting software such as OBS.

You will first need to choose a broadcasting software that supports RTMP streaming and meets your requirements. OBS (Open Broadcaster Software) is a popular choice due to its versatility, but there are other broadcasting softwares available, any that utilise RTMP streaming are compatible with WorkCast. We’re going to focus on OBS because it’s free, open-source, and easy to use.

Download and install OBS onto your computer from the official website by navigating to https://obsproject.com/ and selecting your operating system.

We will talk you through the basics of using OBS further down this on page, but if you would like to find out more information about how OBS works and how to use it with WorkCast, you can find this in this webinar that our CEO ran last year.

Launch OBS and navigate to the "Settings" menu:

Click on the "Stream" tab from the left hand side of the settings menu:

Enter the RTMP URL and stream key, as well as any authentication details provided by WorkCast into the respective fields. Authentication details can be added by ticking the β€˜Use authentication’ box and adding your username and password:

These details will have been provided to you when you enabled live-streaming on your WorkCast account. If you would haven’t already done so, and would like to enable live-streaming on your account, your WorkCast account manager will be able to help with this.

Now that your stream details are added, In OBS, navigate to the "Scenes" panel within the main window, you will already have a Scene by default named β€˜Scene 1’, you can rename this however you would like, the names of scenes are only for your reference:

Now you need to add audio and visual sources to your scene, to do this, first navigate to the "Sources" panel, click the "+" icon to select your sources from the list that pops up:

Most cameras that you connect to your device, including webcams, will need to be added by clicking β€˜Video Capture Device’. You will then be asked to name your source, again, this is only for your reference, so you can name it whatever you would like to then click β€˜OK’ after making sure the β€˜Make source visible’ box is ticked:

Select your camera source from the β€˜Device’ drop down box:

For most cameras and webcams, you can leave the β€˜Resolution/FPS Type’ as the β€˜Device Default’, but if your camera has any additional parameters that need to be specified, they can be edited by changing the β€˜Resolution/FPS Type’ to β€˜Custom’ and adjusting the necessary setting. When you’re finished, click β€˜OK’:

Once you have added your video input devices and any other visual elements you would like to include such as browser sources (Browser), screen sharing (Display Capture/Window Capture), images (Image), slides (Image Slide Show) or text (Text GDI+), you will need to add any required audio sources.

To do this click the β€˜+’ button to add another source and select β€˜Audio Input Capture’.

Name your source just like before, ensure β€˜Make source visible’ is ticked, then press β€˜OK’:

Select your audio source from the β€˜Device’ drop down menu then click β€˜OK’:

Once you're happy with how everything looks, it's time to go live on WorkCast. Return to the main OBS window and click the "Start Streaming" button. OBS will begin broadcasting your live stream to the WorkCast platform via RTMP.
